Carpentry

The mission of this program is to provide instruction in the skills and knowledge to secure employment in the carpentry trade or enter an apprenticeship program. Instruction in the proper use of tools, building layout, form building, framing, rafter and joist construction, interior and exterior walls, installation of doors and windows is included.


Marion County Jobs Training Consortium brings outdoor classroom training to a new level in Lebanon Kentucky. Students from the Marion County Area Technology Center will go on site each day and construction a 1,200 square foot house on Beechwood Street in Lebanon. The foundation was in place when the MCJTC purchased the property. The lot will act as an outdoor classroom where students will learn lessons in construction each day. Performing tasks such as blueprint reading, ordering materials, planning, timelines/deadlines, problem solving and teamwork as they measure, cut, saw and hammer to build a home. These skills and trades will be stepping stones used as they enter the workforce.

This Marion County Jobs Training Consortium project is a great example of partnerships that bring our industry, community, and education together in Lebanon.


COURSES OFFERED

INTRO TO CONSTRUCTION CARPENTRY/LAB   (CAR126/127)

Credit:  1

Grade Level:  9-12

This course emphasizes the types, grades, sizes and standards of building materials including the types of fasteners and their correct uses. Students will also learn to correctly utilize and maintain commonly used hand and power tools. Safety in the lab and on the job site is stressed.

 

Floor & Wall Framing (CAR190/191)

Credit:  1                                                                     

Grades 10-12  

The student will practice floor framing, layout, and construction of floor frames. Cutting and installing floor and wall framing members according to plans and specifications will also be practiced.

 

Ceiling & Roof Framing (CAR196/197)

Credit:  1                                                             

Grade Level:  10-12

This course covers roof types and combinations of roof types used in the construction industry. The emphasis of this course is on layout, cutting and installing ceiling joists, rafters, roof decking, and roof coverings.

 

Site Layout/foundations/lab (car140)

Credit:  2 (2 Blocks, 1 Semester)                   

Grade Level:  10-12

Students will prepare materials, calculate the cost for a building site, and lay out a site with a transit, locating property lines and corners. Students calculate the amount of concrete needed for footing and foundation walls and construct different types of foundations and forms.

 

HOUSE CONSTRUCTION:

FLOOR & WALL FRAMING (CAR190/191)

CEILING & ROOF (CAR196/197)

Credits:  2 (2 Blocks, 1 Semester)

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite:  1 Carpentry Credit &

Instructor Approval

Students will complete tasks from the above 2 courses by building a house off-site.

 

CABINET CONSTRUCTION & INSTALLATION (CAR240)

Credit: 1

Grade Level:  10-12

Students will lay-out and plan the construction of base and wall cabinets.  They will construct, sand, and prepare wood surfaces for finishing, installing cabinets, and special units.

 

CO-OP I CARPENTRY (CAR199)

Credit:  1 (1 Block, 1 Semester)                                    

Grade Level:  11-12

Prerequisite: 2 Carpentry Credits &

Instructor Approval

Co-Op provides supervised on the job work experience related to the student’s educational objective.

 

CO-OP II CARPENTRY (CAR299)

Credit:  2 (2 Blocks, 1 Semester OR 1 Block all year)
