MCPS Inclement Weather Plan -- What to Know

important info

Given the recent changes in weather, now is an excellent time to review Marion County Public School’s Inclement Weather Protocol, as well as Plan B Bus Routes and information related to Non-Traditional Instruction Days.

Complete information concerning inclement weather procedures, Plan B bus routes, and Non-Traditional Instruction Days can be found on the district’s website:  www.marion.kyschools.us.

Below are some important highlights to help you be prepared for potential school closings.

School Cancellation

If conditions are obvious by mid to early evening that the weather will not allow for school the next day, MCPS will make the cancellation call that night by 9:00 p.m. However, when the weather deteriorates overnight, district transportation staff begin checking the roads at 3:30 a.m. that morning. They will also contact local road crews, as well as the police department to pinpoint local trouble areas. By 5:30 a.m. a decision will be made regarding school cancellation.

A One Call Now phone message will go out to every student household, the media, (local, Lexington and Louisville, including approximately ten radio/T.V. stations), and will be posted on the MCPS website. There will also be a voice message on the Central Office information line (270-692.3721, ext. 411).

Wind Chill

MCPS will also monitor wind chill conditions.  If there is a Wind Chill Warning issued for Marion County, a decision to close school will be considered.  However, because of the difficulty in predicting changes in conditions over night, if school is cancelled due to a Wind Chill Warning, that decision will most likely be made in the morning.

If there is a Wind Chill Advisory issued for Marion County, school will most likely be in session unless there are issues with the school buildings or school buses.

The National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Advisory for wind chills of -10 degrees to -24 degrees; a Wind Chill Warning is issued for for wind chills of -25 degrees and greater.

Bus Routes

In the event that school is in session, but buses may not be able to travel their regular routes, there are Plan B Bus Routes that may be used.  When using these routes, buses meet at centralized locations.

Plan B routes may also be used if MCPS is operating on a delayed schedule.

You can view the Plan B routes here.

If the district chooses to use one of its Non-Traditional Instruction Days (NTID) provided by the Kentucky Department of Education, all media announcements will reflect that decision.  This program allows students to complete assignments either online or by traditional means from home and receive credit for the day.

You can access NTID information here.

Additional Information

In the event that unsafe weather conditions occur while school is already in session, MCPS will make a decision based on what is deemed safe for students and will contact parents via One Call Now. Media outlets will be contacted and information will be posted on the MCPS website also. If you are not currently receiving the One Call Now call, or would like to be removed from the list, please contact the Board of Education office at 270-692-3721.

If school is in session, but you feel weather conditions are too dangerous for your child, you may contact your child’s school to request an excused absence for the day.

Media outlets to be contacted include: The Lebanon Enterprise, WLSK 100.9, WDRB 41, WAVE 3, WLKY 32, WHAS 11, WKYT 27, WLEX 18, BIG DAWG 99.9, and WCKQ Q104.1.
