Spelling words this week contain long and short vowel sounds. Remember spelling sentences and ABC order are due by Friday. Students have another five week list of words to keep in their homework folders. Don’t forget the review and challenge words do not need to be included in the spelling sentences and ABC order for the week just the 14 basic words.
Students took their addition assessment over addition last week. For the most part students performed well. The only problem area I could see was the word problems especially the two step word problems. We will continue to work on these types of problems all year. We are currently working on our subtraction unit. The one area I feel may cause students problem with subtraction is subtracting across zeros.
Students have a home project for social studies. We have discussed time lines and how they show significant events in history. All students are to create a time line showing events that have made each year of their life special. Example: birth, first birthday, first haircut, first pet, first family vacation, first day of school, etc. Students have paper for this project. Students are to illustrate a picture, color, and write about each event. You can also use photographs which would be easier. You may want to scan these photos or use the original. Sometimes cutting up the photos may work better for the space you have to work in, that’s why scanning might be a good idea. Be creative and have fun going down memory lane. These time lines are due by Wednesday, September 25, 2018. Any time students have a home project I try to give enough time to complete it without interfering with other work they may have. When these projects are completed they can be brought in at any time and they will be displayed in the hall for all to enjoy. This will be a grade for social studies.
This week we will be learning all about the Constitution. Constitution Day was September 17. It is mandatory that students learn about what it is and how it came to be. We will be completing several activities, reading books, as well as viewing a few educational videos.
Mark your calendars for Sept. 28-Oct. 7 for Fall Break. This will be a nice time to refresh our minds and come back strong ready to give it all we’ve got!
