KINDERGARTENERS

  They are starting to learn:

  • basic rules about reading--for example, that a page is read from top to bottom and left to right
  • the alphabet
  • phonics
  • how to write their names and other simple words 
  • how to sound out words
  • repetitive reading

FIRST GRADERS

They are beginning to use these skills to:

  • sound out more words
  • read out loud
  • write their own short stories
  • master more sight words

SECOND GRADERS
They are beginning to:

  • read longer words
  • spell familiar words correctly
  • sound out unfamiliar words
  • figure out new words used in sentences
  • use dictionaries
  • name synonyms (words that have the same meaning)
  • name antonyms (opposites)
