News From Mrs. Smith

November 27, 2017

Shine your light night: Mark your calendar for December 7 to be at Calvary fro Shine your night and let your child explain how we use the Leader In Me and the 7 habits of happy kida!!

It is hard to believe there are only 15 days left in the first ½ of the school year. The students have learned so much and there is a lot more to learn. In January we will begin to take spelling test, reading independently and taking Accelerated Reader (AR) test independent, writing complete sentences and short stories. All of these need to be completely independent by the time your child finishes Kindergarten to be fully prepared for first grade.  Sight words: Continue to work on sight words the children are very excited to see words they know when reading. I am sending home the entire list of sight words, these are words your child should know before the end of kindergarten to be prepared for first grade.

Head Phones: Please send in headphones for your child, there have been cases of lice in our building and it is easily spread. If you do not want your child to possibly bring it home send in headphones.

Math: We are learning about common attributes and how to sort objects using different attributes.

Reading: We are learning about characters in stories. Remember when talking about a story your child has read have him or her to describe the character and what happened in the story.

Letters to Santa: We will be writing letters to Santa for the Lebanon Enterprise. I will only allow the children to ask Santa for 3 things. Be watching for the Santa letters in the newspaper.

Science:  We will begin to learn about force with pushes and pulls.

Assessments:  This week all students will take the MAP assessment which will show what your child needs to work on in both reading and math skills. This assessment is given on the computers and your child will be using their headphones.  We have been using the computers in class and several children are having trouble using the computer mouse. Most are used to using tablets swiping their screens but cannot control a mouse. If you have a computer please let your child use the mouse. Students are also being assessed with the (DRA) Diagnostic Reading Assessment, which will show if your child is on level, above or below for reading at this time of the kindergarten year.

Christmas: Remember we will have a Christmas party in our room with a gift exchange. I only allow up to a $5.00 gift. Girls will exchange with girls and boys with boys. If this is a hardship please let me know so I can be sure that all children will be part of the fun.
