Developmental Norms for school age children
3 yrs. – vocabulary up to 1000 words, name one color, talk during play, tells basic story, uses 3-4 words in a sentence, knows his or her full name, can tell age, can repeat parts of a familiar song or nursery rhyme, understands “not”, identifies categories
4 yrs. – vocabulary up to 1500 words, understands more colors, follows 2-3 step commands, asks questions, uses 4-5 words in a sentence, uses spatial concepts, talks in past tense correctly.
5 yrs. – vocabulary up to 2000 words, understands simple opposites (up, down), can identify which is larger or smaller, or the same, responds to questions, sentence length is 5 words or more, names all colors, enjoys pretend play such as cooking dinner or mowing the lawn like mommy or daddy, developing phonological (sound/letter) awareness skills, can generate sentences that include future, present, and past tense and clauses, understands time/space.
