Social and Emotional Learning

What is SEL?

SEL is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (CASEL).

Why is SEL important?

More than 2 decades of research shows that SEL leads to:

●     Increased Academic Achievement with students who participated in evidence based SEL programs

●     Improved Behavior with decreased dropout rates, school and classroom behavior issues, drug use, teen pregnancy, mental health problems, and criminal behavior

●     Improved Life Outcomes decreasing the likelihood of involvement with police, being on a waitlist for public housing, receiving public assistance, or spending time in a detention facility
