Boasting a career full of varied educational experiences, Dr. David Gibson has been hired to serve as the Chief Academic and School Support Officer for Marion County Schools. Gibson comes to MCPS having most recently taught math at Morton Middle School in Fayette County. Previously, Gibson taught in both public and private schools, a postsecondary institution, and also spent one year teaching abroad in South Korea.

In his new role with MCPS, Gibson will be tasked with working closely with the district’s secondary schools focusing on student learning. He will also oversee the district’s human resources.

“The job fits what I’ve enjoyed doing in my career,” Gibson said. “Through my experience, I really understand that schools have so many different components that have to work well together to make the whole school work together well. And everybody is an important part of that.”

Gibson earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from Purdue University, a master’s degree in school counseling from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Gibson worked as a professor at Midway College for eight years, has five years experience working in private schools, and has served in a host of other educational roles. He was also the 2004 Washington County Teacher of the Year.

Despite his own experience, Gibson says he’s most excited about learning from his colleagues in MCPS.

“I’ve worked in a lot of different places, and every school is different and I’ve learned something from all of those experiences,” Gibson said. “I’m looking forward to learning from people here, and hopefully giving to others what I’ve learned.”

New MCPS Superintendent Chris Brady had high praise for Gibson.

“I’m very excited to have Dr. Gibson join our team and I feel confident he’ll provide the type of collaborative leadership I’m looking to grow in MCPS,” Brady said. “He has a wealth of experience and an incredible talent in understanding student academic achievement.”

Gibson and his wife, Christine, have two children: Drew, 12, and Mary, 10.
